Christmas show title revealed!!
GRACE & THE ISLAND OF MISFITS is the working title of our new musical. And, yes, it is a Holiday show! Designed to be performed during the Christmas season. Again, the show has a strong set of female leads and a mostly female cast. Here is my elevator pitch:
“A brilliant, young woman, fresh out of college is stuck at a dead-end job at a toy store, three days before Christmas. She desperately yearns to leave Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and to discover her purpose in life. Suddenly, she receives a magical letter pleading for help – and her Christmas quests begins! And it all starts on the legendary Island of Misfit Toys!”
Grace, the protagonist, is a strong-willed, brilliant young college graduate. I imagine she is like a female Luke Skywalker – brave but conflicted. She is stuck in a dead-end job at a toy store, after she could not get a job in her chosen field. She graduated college with a degree in Astrophysics, but is stuck in her life now. With both of her parents dead, she struggles to find her purpose in life.
Charlotta is our villain. She is not only mean, cruel and self-centered, she is also hysterically funny. She dreams of stopping the traditional Christmas and, instead, creating a holiday dedicated to … well…her. She is a science wiz and a serious plotter……how else could she capture Santa and take over the whole workshop!
Ahhhhh, but enough plot for now. Back to the title.
Does the Island of Misfits sound familiar? It relates to the 1964 stop-motion television Christmas special – Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. In our musical, much of the action takes place on the Island of Misfits, but populated by toys you’ve never seen before. Who is pleading for help and why do they need help? Why does Grace get this letter? What does Grace know that others don’t? Will Charlotta stop Christmas this year? Will Christmas be saved?
You get it……Wish us luck!
